For a small business website the reported range was $1,000–$7,000, built in 1–12 weeks; for an ecommerce website it was $5,000–$50,000+, built in 4–16 weeks. These are the vendors’ own ranges, collected worldwide.
Clutch, which collects prices from verified client reviews, reports that most web design projects reviewed on its platform cost less than $10,000. Its average is higher — $38,105.39 — because a mean is pulled up by a few large projects, which is exactly why the typical figure is the more useful one for a small business (Web Design Pricing Guide, updated September 21, 2026).
What do web designers charge per hour?
On Clutch’s own figures, US-based web design firms on its shortlists bill around $100–$149 an hour. For a small site the hourly figure matters less than one question to ask any developer: what is the fixed price for the scope we agreed?
What does a website cost to run?
Running costs are mostly subscriptions, and their list prices are public. Which of these you need depends on how the site is built.

Maintenance is the one cost with no fair market figure: it depends entirely on the site. Have it scoped with the build, or agree a small monthly retainer in writing.
What should you ask a web developer before hiring one?
A fixed price for an agreed scope. In writing, before any work starts, with any change quoted before it is made.
Who owns what. Your domain, hosting and any payment account should be in your business’s name from day one, and the site and its files should be yours once it is paid for.
How it will be found. The basics of local search — a Google Business Profile, a clear page for each thing you sell, a fast site that works on a phone — belong in the build, not in a later upsell.
Who you will talk to. Ask whether the person you speak to is the person who builds the site, and what happens when you need a change after launch.
Work they can show you. Ask to see sites or apps they built and are allowed to show, and how each one is doing today.
