The concept behind this documentary brand film
Streaming and documentary brand film — VERITÉ turns a flat still into a moving shot with real parallax, a documentary 2.5D dolly. The frame is separated into a stack of named depth planes — foreground, subject, midground, background, atmosphere — and the camera dollies through them with a shifting depth-of-field, built plane by plane. It is the register for streaming and documentary brands, where archival stills and one-off photography have to feel cinematic and alive.
The capability is quietly powerful for any brand sitting on a library of flat images: we can give them motion without a reshoot. It is a distinct technique from the true-3D films elsewhere on the site — depth assigned to the layers of a photograph, not a modelled scene — and shown here as its own world. A self-initiated concept piece, studio spec work.
A documentary brand film that prints the depth it is claiming
The piece is one technique held for its whole runtime, and its interest is that it shows its working. A flat archive still is separated into a stack of layers and the camera is moved through them, so the frame gains real parallax without a single new frame of photography being shot. What keeps that from being a trick is the readout. Through the opening movement a ramp stands at the right of the frame running from near to far, and it names every layer the picture is made of — foreground, subject, midground, background, atmosphere — with each one’s position on that scale printed beside it. The strip along the bottom edge states the same fact in a different form, naming the move as a depth-from-image dolly and giving the number of planes in it. While the two are up together, count the labelled stops on the ramp and you get the number printed in the strip.
It is equally explicit about what it is moving through. Before the first move the footer labels the source — an archive frame, its process, and its condition — and the second scene names its own subject and year and marks its depth as recovered rather than photographed. That is the discipline the data films on this site apply to a chart, carried into a piece where the temptation runs the other way: a good 2.5D move looks like it was always in the negative, and saying out loud that it was not is the thing that makes it craft rather than sleight of hand.
One point deserves to be exact, because this technique is easy to over-sell. The stack is small and the film prints its size: this is a hand-built separation into a handful of named planes, not a dense depth map inferred by a model — and it does not need to be one. The move a buyer is paying for is identical either way, and a library of flat images can be given motion without a reshoot on that basis alone. The closing card marks the piece a studio concept commission, illustrative only, with no sales claims — and the three service lines the film puts up before it describe a subscription that does not exist. The vertical data drop holds to the same rule at a twentieth of this runtime: nothing on screen that is not in the material.
