SHARD & SEAM (Concept)

A craft brand film that documents the break like a lab report

Kintsugi is the subject most likely to be shot as a mood — warm light, slow hands, a voice about imperfection. This one is filed instead. Its working two-thirds run under figure numbers in the top-left corner — four of them, each naming what is being shown: the hand-thrown vessel, the stress and the glaze fault, the fracture field, and the seam with its gold repair. A film about a broken pot, indexed the way a materials test is indexed. That inversion is the whole idea, and it is what makes the register usable by a craft or heritage brand: it hands them the vocabulary of evidence instead of the vocabulary of sentiment, and it gives every claim in the film somewhere to sit.

The middle of it is the argument, made in composition before it is made in words. The vessel does not shatter into a cut. Its fracture pattern is drawn onto the whole, intact object first, as dark cell lines with no gold anywhere in them — the break is a structure the object already had, not damage applied to it later. Only then does it open. And when it opens, the shards travel outward while the gold stays: a lit network of joins holding the centre of the frame with nothing left to join. For those seconds the join is the only whole thing in the frame — the vessel is still there, but distributed, its fragments spread wide around a network with nothing left to hold together. The film then closes the vessel back around it, gold on every join. Two captions say this in words afterwards. The composition had already said it.

Before it closes it puts up a materials record — body, firing, repair, and the number of shards rejoined. That last figure is the same one the running head carried over the fracture field earlier, so the film keeps its own count across two points a viewer can pause on and check. Then it does close on a mood after all: a brand card holding the crest, the wordmark and a one-line tagline, which is the conventional ending the rest of the piece spends its runtime avoiding. Which is exactly why the closing line matters: it names the piece studio spec work for a brand that does not exist, and marks the craft facts illustrative. A panel that carries the authority of a spec sheet is the easiest place for a concept film to mislead by accident, and this one qualifies itself on the same card it makes its claims on. The measurement-document product film borrows the same figure-numbered grammar for a subject at the opposite end of the temperature range.
